Rochester - Sister of Mercy Mary Marvin, formerly Sister Mary Madeline, died Feb. 11, 2026.
Sister Marvin entered the congregation in 1958 from her home parish of St. Patrick, Macedon. She professed her final vows in 1966. She earned an associate's degree from Catherine McAuley Junior College; a bachelor's degree in history and education from Nazareth College; a master's degree in school counseling from Dayton University, and an advanced certificate in educational administration from SUNY Brockport.
Sister Marvin served as a teacher at Good Shepherd, Henrietta; St. Andrew, Rochester; St. Rita, Webster; St. Vincent, Corning; Our Lady Queen of Peace, Brighton, and St. Michael, Newark. For six years, she was administrator at St. Thomas the Apostle School in Irondequoit before she was named pastoral assistant at St. Ann Church in Palmyra/St. Gregory Church in Marion. Sister Marvin was also chaplain at Strong Memorial and Genesee hospitals before becoming principal at St. Monica School in Rochester in 1991. Sister Marvin has also served as activities director for the Sisters of Mercy and worked with refugee resettlement. She was also an integral part of the Sisters of Mercy music group.
Sister Marvin was survived by her siblings, Phil, Margaret, Maddie and John; many friends; and her sisters in the congregation.
