Rochester - Sister of St. Joseph Joan Margaret Kunz, who was a professor of theology and religious studies at Nazareth College for 28 years, died March 11, 2026. She was 98 years old.

Sister Kunz entered the congregation in 1945 from her home parish of Holy Family, Rochester. She earned a bachelor's degree in German and history in 1949 from Nazareth College and a master's degree in German in 1957 from Catholic University. She also received a master's degree in sacred doctrine in 1963 and a doctor of philosophy degree in sacred doctrine in 1964 from Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Ind.

Sister Kunz began teaching junior high at Nazareth Hall, Rochester in 1949. She also taught at St. Patrick, Mount Morris, and Sacred Heart Cathedral School, Rochester. In 1958, Sister Kunz was assigned to Mt. Carmel High School, Auburn.

In 1964, Sister Kunz became the assistant professor of theology at Nazareth College. She was promoted to professor of religious studies in 1977. Sister Kunz remained at Nazareth College until her retirement in 1992.

After retiring from Nazareth College, Sister Kunz worked in the Sisters of St. Joseph's spirituality ministry for 10 years. She then volunteered at St. Martin's Place, providing meals for the needy. She remained there until the kitchen closed.

Sister Kunz is survived by her nieces and nephews; friends; and her sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated March 19, 2026, with burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
