Dorothy Dobson Obituary

Dorothy Ann Pryor Dobson, a longtime human-rights and community-service leader in Rochester, died Nov. 19, 2023. She was 89 years old.


A native of Chester, Va., Mrs. Dobson graduated in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in sociology from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. She went on to serve for more than 31 years as a social worker with the Monroe County Department of Social Services.


Mrs. Dobson was involved in a number of civic organizations, including Jack and Jill of America Inc., the Diocese of Rochester's Office of Black Ministries, American Association of Retired Persons, Girls Scouts USA, YWCA, United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes, Lifespan, and Catholic Charities. In addition, she and her husband, James A. Dobson — who died in 1997 — were active in the oversight of a 254-unit apartment complex in southwest Rochester for low- to moderate-income people.


In 2017, Mrs. Dobson was awarded the Human Rights Medal by North Carolina A&T — the university's highest honor.


Mrs. Dobson was a faithful member of Rochester's Immaculate Conception Parish, where she sang in the gospel choir.


She is survived by her daughters, Jacquelyn, Dr. Kimberley and Gina M. Dobson; sister, Jean Pryor; and other relatives, friends and church family members.


Calling hours for Mrs. Dobson will take place Nov. 30, 2023, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception/St. Bridget Church, 445 Frederick Douglass St., Rochester. Her funeral Mass will immediately follow. Interment will be at Rochester's Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
